As many of us are aware, we have had our share of incidents recently here in the UK which have left thousands of breastfeeding mums outraged.
A recent comment from an American politician however, has to be amongst the worst we have heard.
New Hampshire state Rep, Josh Moore who described himself as “Pro-Family conservative” has recently made a somewhat alarming comment, stating that “if women who want to breastfeed their children in public are allowed to expose their nipples, then I am also allowed to grab their nipples and play around with them”.
When he was asked why he would see a natural and accepted practice of breastfeeding as “alarming” and “offensive”, Moore replied, “it’s not about breastfeeding as an activity, it’s about the principle.”
Moore continued “Breastfeeding in public infuriates me, because it means women have to bear their chest and nipples to do it, and that causes a distraction and sets a bad example for people, and especially, small children. We can’t have that, we just can’t”.
Arguing with New Hampshire state Rep Amanda Bouldin, More stated that “If it’s a woman’s natural inclination to pull her nipple out in public, then you should have no problem with a mans inclination to stare at it and grab it. After all, it’s ALL relative and natural”.
The comment was made during an argument over proposed legislation that would make it illegal for women to expose their nipples in public. Currently in New Hampshire both men and women are allowed to go topless, but the new legislation would make this an offence.
The comments were made on Facebook, and Moore has since deleted them.
Hopefully the fact that he has deleted these ridiculous comments means that he has realised he made an enormous mistake.
We offer our support and solidarity to our fellow mums in New Hampshire and hope you can see these comments for what they really are.
